Yesterday I was rummaging in my pocket for change for the TTC and I pulled out a "toonie"...then saw it had a picture of a strange building on it.

Looking at it a little closer I saw that the writing on this coin was in Chinese...so obviously it was something else. The "ring" was a little smaller than a toonie and the brass "plug" in the centre a little bit larger.

Last night poked around on the net and discovered that it was a $50 Taiwan piece...and with the Taiwan dollar being worth about four cents...the coin is worth about...$2.00 Canadian.

So rats...can't get a "bargain" from the vending machines either!

But every now and then...especially in Toronto you do get some "strange change".

Other Commonwealth coins are, well, common enough - at least in my pocket change. Seems I get something from Australia or Britain about once every few months. I'm also amazed that I can occasionally come across a silver quarter or dime. They're obviously a different colour than the modern nickel versions, most have a different Queen's head on the obverse, they ring differently when dropped, and we've all had 35 years to notice and take them all out of circulation. Some remain however. I've even received, in change, a 1967 silver Centennial quarter with the lynx on it, and a few dimes with the fish as well. How can people not notice?

I once got plastic "school money" for change once. It was only a plastic school penny, but the humor was there

If you get a quarter before 1968, hang onto it. They are very rare, and I managed to get one from the 1950s. I dunno what it's worth but I should take my coins to a nuismatist and see if I can get some mon-AY.

My mother used to run a cafeteria a few years back; we have a piggyback full of coins from France, Lithuania, Spain, Cuba, and a few other countries from the vending machines

Most of the pre-68 silver coins disappeared around 1981 when the Hunt Brothers cornered the international silver market and silver spiked to over $100 an ounce for a while. All of the silver coins got shipped stateside to be melted down.

Back then there were ads in the papers all the time for "common" Canadian silver coins...they'd pay astronomical prices for them. I think the old silver dimes were being bought up for $2 a piece at one point.

We were in recession then so alot of folks "cashed in" to make a few quick bucks.

Then of course the market crashed and silver plunged back down to where it "normally" is around $6.00 an ounce.

Back when my washing machine was on the fritz, and I was doing laundry at the laundromat, I used to get about $20.00 worth of quarters from the machine at a time.

One I heard the tell tale ring of silver as the quarters fell, and I found a Centential quarter in the change.

I still find the odd silver dime too.

I'm not sure about what value they have for the silver, but as collector's items, having been circulated, they aren't worth much.

It's not possible for a good condition silver coin to have been in circulation since '68. I suspect they are from change ripped off from someone's stash during a B & E or something.

My 1958 quarter isn't in good shape, no. The date's readable but it's clearly faded so it's been actually circulating for all those years.

The 2002 10 Eurocent coin is nice and thick. Almost loonie-coloured. About a hair thicker than a Canadian nickel. In my hand I've got a bunch of S Korean coins, a hefty two pence piece that's the colour of dried blood... and some maple leaves.
