Sweden is to take the biggest energy step of any advanced western economy by trying to wean itself off oil completely within 15 years - without building a new generation of nuclear power stations.

The attempt by the country of 9 million people to become the world's first practically oil-free economy is being planned by a committee of industrialists, academics, farmers, car makers, civil servants and others, who will report to parliament in several months.

Lots of examples in here of what we could and should be doing, but aren't.

Yes, Canada should be doing the same thing. Unfortunately, we seem to be drifting toward the American model of oil gluttany.

We are headed (already there?) to the American precident of our energy-rich region having an unnaturally strong influence on national politics.

Alberta is the new Texas.

The problems relating to Canada not being a good candidate for coming up with new and original ideas and initiatives on its own are as follows.

Canadians are still too authority respecting, not challenging enough in spirit. And authorities, seeing the benefits of it, ie. easier to rule, promote it, rather than taking steps to promote new ideas, new thinkers. The REALLY highprofiling of new ideas, of imagination is truly a rarity in this country.

Although Canadians SPEAK strongly about democracy, they have yet to demonstrate a strong devotion to it. There has been a significant decline in democracy in this country in the last 20 years.

A refusal by the governing cadres to look seriously at proportional representation in Parliament means that new ideas are not being circulated by new parties with new ideas - eg. The Green Party of Canada.

All the above has led to a declining interest in politics by the youth of this country, ie. attracting the best minds around.

Finally, Canadians have a bad record regarding self-criticism in daily life. We have no problem pointing fingers at others, but do it to ourselves and we are seen as anti-Canadian troublemakers.

All the above has resulted in what we have forgotten so quickly....The Just For Laughs Festival gave the Government of Canada "The Dumbest Government Award".

And yes, it is sad to see that Canada acts so quickly once its southern neighbour decides to steps. (sigh).

How exactly is Alberta's influence on national politics "unnaturally strong"? If no one outside of Alberta voted Conservative, the Conservatives would have 28 seats.

This is typical of the Swedes. They replenished forests after industrialists mowed them down. They figured out that kids can't learn on empty stomachs while economic Darwinism made mock of literacy in the States. They decided to focus on medical and other research while letting the Yanks and Japanese battle it out over electronics and cars ... and Canada relying on whatever our foreign-based corporate masters dictate economic agendas to us while being dealt a full-house in natural resources.

Canada should aspire to be more like Sweden and not a toxic smog cloud on the road to serfdom down thataway.

(Pointing east, vaguely in the direction of Swedent)

THAT's the sort of international leadership we need, right there. Good luck to you Sweden!
