But of course the true connection is with social class. Taller people are more likely to have been well-nourished as children.

This study claims that because the taller of two twins makes more, the "social class" hypothesis is debunked.

In reality, there may well be some advantage to being tall which is not related to social class.
But that fact does not mean that there is not also
an advantage based on social class.

There’s no doubt truth in this. I’ve seen numerous studies that indicate height, good looks (men included), and hair correlate strongly with income and influence. Not so shocking really, being the visual animals we are.

Anecdotally, I witness this on an almost daily basis. My livelihood brings me into close proximity to all sorts and stripes; and with little variance, the wealthy successful types are taller, better looking, less fat, etc. when compared to the middle or lower classes. I’ve noticed the same in many other countries as well. A drive from San Jose to Carmel or from Phoenix to Scottsdale is like a slow witness to the apparent transition in the human physique. And it’s not race-based.

It seems this might be a chicken or egg question. But, I think, it is real. Whatever “it” is. I suspect several million years of DNA refinement may be at work here.

Yeah, but I notice most we are taller than our parents and are kids are taller than us. Could beef hormones be involved?

I'm six feet, and have spent the last 9 months unemployed, while all the short people laid off from the office have found new jobs and are prospering.

I understand your point RJ..but I think the general story is that if you take 2 people with the same educations, brains, chrisima etc etc but thier height and looks were different, I would say the better looking of the 2 weather it be the tall one or the shorter one will get the job more then 50% of hte time. I think its not just height but looks in general that we consider unconciously when deciding who to hire. You might have a short good looking guy and a tall homley guy but its likely the shorter of hte 2 will get it.

I think height is just one part of a wider spectrum of cosmetics that we take into consideration. They say first impressions mean everything. This explains that. You have an attraction to a better loooking person, or a feeling that you don't mind looking at a person compared to the opposite feeling for an ugly person.

looks certainly do give you that first impression advantage, be it height or leaness or just general good looks. Sorry for the long post.

I remember 1.5-2 years ago a study concluded that women are more likely to find tall men attractive and personable. The reason: genetics. Maybe height equates to better being able to (not bear offspring, but I can't think of another word). Height is important. Heck, there are some students in my classes who are equally annoying, but the short ones piss me off more. Or maybe they are not equally annoying, but it seems like a conspiracy. The short kids are out to get me.

I thought that was because the only thing we're good at is getting things off the shelf and opening jars.

What about those freaky-looking jar-openers?

I was referring to gadgets, and not to ugly men.

I'm an hour behind the babble clock. Are you my mother under an alias? Because my mother knew of this site before I, and you always nag me about my bedtime.
