Ha, I liked the category, "Best Actress in a Romantic Lead Opposite a Man Old Enough to Be Her Father". Ain't that the truth!

Well, jeez, this requires me to weigh in (in a few categories - my lack of movie seeing is embarassingly evident in these things):

quote:
Best Actress in a Male-Fantasy Role
Emily Watson, Punch-Drunk Love
Leonor Watling, Talk to Her
Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Femme Fatale
Liv Tyler, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Natalie Portman, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Winner - obviously Natalie Portman. The white shirt braless nipple shots, the Lucas designed black bondage dress, the "weird beastie rips off half my shirt and shows off my great abs but I can still kick ass and need you at the same time" scene. Though I'll admit I don't quite understand why Liv Tyler is in this category (and Punch Drunk Love was pretty much a fantasy on all levels anyways, so its inclusion doesn't seem fully fair to me. She was great though.)

quote:
Best Actress in a Romantic Lead Opposite a Man Old Enough to Be Her Father
Hilary Swank, Insomnia
Wanda De Jesus, Blood Work
Debra Messing, Hollywood Ending
Tea Leoni, Hollywood Ending
Do Thi Hai Yen, The Quiet American

I haven't actually seen any of these (minus Insomnia, where at least Swank's character was more eager than romantic in my mind), but given Woody Allen's penchance for casting far younger, far more attractive women as his romantic leads, and the fact that I want to force feed Debra Messing, I'll go with Tea Leoni.

Daryl Hannah, A Walk to Remember
Geena Davis, Stuart Little 2
Kim Cattrall, Crossroads
Lesley Ann Warren, Secretary
Kim Basinger, 8 Mile

Again, haven't seen any of these. But Kim Catrall and Kim Basinger both get romantic lead work still, don't they? And luckily they're of the age where they could be someone's mom (aren't they all in their 40s?). So, let's say Geena Davis, just for fun.

quote:
Lifetime Achievement Award for Surviving Hollywood with Her Dignity More or Less Intact
Susan Sarandon, Goldie Hawn, Catherine Deneuve, Sissy Spacek, Sally Field, Diane Keaton

Hmmm....I'll have to go with Deneuve - not so Hollywood, but lots of dignity. In my mind, Hawn doesn't count - I can't think of a role where she's played a woman rather than a grown girl. Sally Field in a close runner up.

Kim Basinger's filmography.

Kim Cattrall's.

According to those links, Kim Cattrall is 47, Kim Basinger is 50. In either case, they're probably both older than the "average" mother. Don't really know much about either of their recents works (Cattral I know from Sex and the City, where she definately still romances; last I recognized from Basinger was from 5 years ago, so I can't say).

In either case, I would think this category would more appropriately be dealing with actresses like Angela Lansbury, who played the mother in the Manchurian Canadidate, though I believe she was in reality only a few years older than the actor playing her son, and illustrate how women can't look "old". That weird Hollywood convention where people in their low 20s play 16 year olds, and women in their low 30s play 45 year olds. And women in after that tend to be ignored - good to see some high profile examples against that, though I think the trend is still evident.

Oh, and on the nude scene, I'd think Kathy Bates would deserve to win, because no matter how "required" a scene is, it seems perky breasts and a tiny waist are usually also "required." How much braver is it to show a woman who challenges facist beauty standards, at any age!

I always thought the worst case of going from "Romantic Lead" to "Someone's Mother" was Sally Field; Tom Hanks' love interest in "Punchline" (1988) to his mother in "Forrest Gump" (1994). She aged a lot in six years.

As for Liv Tyler in LOTR, I believe her award should be "Best Performance in Female Role that wasn't nearly so big in original book but was added to keep everyone from realizing story is the biggest homo-erotic romp since Spartacus".

Cheers,

She went to someone's mother before Forrest Gump when she was in Not Without My Daughter in 1991.

But not the same person to whom she was a love interest, 6 years earlier.

How old would the average mother be?

I turned 44 today I am now too old to be a mom?
