I agree, pesky. Ramadan sounds like exactly the kind of scholar universities are supposed to have, one who can engage all comers.

American universities are facing a rising assault from the right, it seems. I'll be back with a cross-link to another thread above about the right's use of the courts to interfere in academic hiring.

You know what the university should do? They should set up the lectures via satellite, just to piss off the US Government.

I can't access the second page so here is another link about this:
Muslim scholar condemns US decision to cancel visa http://www.nzz.ch/2004/08/25/english/page-synd5168956.html

Notice that it cancelled an already issued visa.

Besides the obvious racism it also look like the left hand doesn't know what the right one is doing.

I also keep reading that less and less foreign students are going to study in the US and that some eminent professors are leaving. At least, the US will be the leader in creationist "Science".

In the mid-90's Ramadan was banned from entering France due to suspicions of being connected with Algerian terrorists who carried out several bombings in Paris around that time, and more recently has been accused of anti-Semitism for (better sit down!) criticizing Israel. Some French Muslims consider him two-faced, sort of a "kinder gentler" fundamentalist. Although no one has made these accusations stick, there's no way Tom "we don't do politics at Homeland Security" Ridge is going to allow him a visa this close to the US election. Imagine the right wing media tongues a wagging.

Here's an interesting article on him.

P.S. Michelle, that's a great idea.

Do you have a link? From what direction are these criticisms coming - i.e. from more 'progressive' (I hate that word sometimes...) Muslims, or from Fundamentalists who think that he's gone soft? Or both?
