NS Green party leaders resign over executive election rift

I really don't know anything about it.

Puzzled when the new leader didn't run in the by-election that came up... I think he even happens to live there. His partner ran instead [one of the deputy leaders that quit].

Last year the PCs and the Liberals sat down to craft a new elections financing bill- trading off 'unique' features favouring each of them.

One of the non-unique features the struggling Liberals got was public funding for the parties. And as a clear gratuitous kick at the NDP, the two parties conferred official party status on the Greens- who have had zero impact here.

The tiny Green vote in NS provincial politics comes mostly at the expense of the NDP. But we'll have a number of close races and the seat totals between the government and the NDP will probably be close.

Whatever actually happens- the intent and hope of the PCs and Libs is clear.

I don't know when the public funding kicks in, but it's as close to an opportunity as the NS Greens could ever get.

They get no buzz from Liz May's presence. When she spoke at the party conference and "leadership vote" that got the media to come. And that's been it.

This bozo won with a few dozen votes- hardly the makings for the references in the story by the quiting leader to plots from 'failed candidates'.

The Greens got official party status even though they've NEVER won a seat?

Gee, the Marxist-Leninists and the Rhinos should apply for it there while they're at it.

Sections 21A to C of the Members and Public Employees Disclosure Act are the relevant legislation [see http://tinyurl.com/2jz89r ]. There seems to be no lower threshold for the payment. Given recent Court decisions such as the one that led to the requirement to field 50 candidates federally in order to retain party status being overturned, the Nova Scotia government probably thought having no limit was a good idea.

But the NS government seems to have gone far, far out of its way to fincnace the Greens in comparison to the votes they received. Though it's not a "flat rate" to each registered party -- it suposedly comes from the number of votes received in the last election -- there was some one-time boost for the Greens that is obvious from the figures available at http://www.electionsnovascotia.ns.ca/publicfunding.asp. Contrast these public funding dollars with the number of votes received by Party in the 2006 election, which were:
PC: 160,119 votes - ($1.68 in 2007/08 per 2006 vote received)
NDP: 140,128 votes - ($1.79 in 2007/08 per 2006 vote received)
Lib: 94,872 votes - ($2.22 in 2007/08 per 2006 vote received)
Green: 9,411 votes - ($14.18 in 2007/08 per 2006 vote received)

That's quite a boost caused by the "flat amount" on top of the per vote amount. I bet the Marxist-Leninists really regret not having registered as a party and having been able to get in on this!

Follow-up story on the Green leaders announcing they were resigning:

quote:
A few hours later, Chris Alders, head organizer for the party, issued a release, saying Mr. McGowan’s news release was "not authorized" by the party, and another release would follow.

Mr. Alders said that in the 23 months since it was founded, the provincial Green Party membership has reached 180 to 200 members.

Stunning.

Okay so I read the thread and was in shock so I emailed Chris Alders, contact GREEN PARTY WEBSITE and ask if this rumour is true, that was 4 days ago and nada so far but I have been told he is sick....

Now if the feelers in my community are true ( I am in Eastern Passage) then both Ken M and his patna Bev Woodfield have both quit the party due to in-house mutiny that appears to be unresolvable.
The next in line to the throne, Ellen, is now in charge.

I will get back with more when I can.

What a surprise they didn't want to get back to you to give their presumably more complimentary version.

But what would I know about doing party building from inside a bunker?

Ken, I still have not heard a word from Chris A via -email soooooooooo ...it is still unofficial...both Ken McGowan and Beverley Woodfield (partners in real life)have officially resigned from the Green Party due to irreconcilable differences on party platform priorities....that is the unofficial scoop from the street

I thought it was bad manners not to reply to a genuine question but I did hear that flu takes no prisoners...
