Some very interesting stuff is happening in Mexico where the Fox government has been attempting to block popular Mexico City mayor Lopez Obrador from running as the PRD candidate in next year's presidential election through a trumped-up court case.

Over a million people demonstrated in Mexico City over a week ago...and I understand that was the "police estimate"...so it was probably double.

quote:
The terse statement announcing the decision brought an anticlimactic end to a crisis that battered President Vicente Fox, threatened the legitimacy of the 2006 presidential election in which Lopez Obrador is considered the favorite, and prompted a protest march of more than 1 million people through the capital 10 days ago.

The move, however, was largely seen as a formality, after a political solution was reached last week by Fox, who accepted his attorney general's resignation and vowed to end the mayor's prosecution.

So, in short, they tried a nasty, sleazy tactic, the people pushed back, the people won, the sleazebuckets lost.
Hurrah!

From what I hear they are all sleezebuckets, the mayor of Mexico City, included. But, then, the person relating that to me also said that the system is so corrupt it is the only way to get things done.

God bless PAN. They may suck, but unlike PRI, they don't send death squads out to mow down protestors.

I don't know that. My impression is that it is pretty brutal all around.
