saw a guy in the supermarket today twisting his 10 year old son's ear cos he wanted him to go get the trolley. I'm so glad this will soon be illegal here! (is there anything I could have said?)

It's hard to know what to say in a situation like that. I suppose you could say something like what you said here - "Good thing hurting children is going to be illegal soon," or something like that.

Seems to me that even before our corporal punishment laws in Ontario (or was it Canada? I can't remember) changed, doing something like twisting a kid's ear (so that it hurt, not just a tweak) would have been illegal anyhow. I'm not sure, though. I suppose if beating a kid with a belt wasn't illegal, twisting their ear wouldn't have been.

They tried to make childbeating illegal here, but then caved in to Focus on the Family types who were upset that their Christian right to beat their children might be infringed upon. So they decided that they would allow certain types of beating, between certain ages, instead. I forget what the rules are. They're not really relevant for me since I don't beat my child at all, whether with an open hand to the bottom or a belt or fists or anything else.

- between age 2 -12

- open hand

- over clothes

- can't leave a mark

- on the bum

- If there's ever been a problem, the CAS can order that you can't use physical punishment at all.

I am, as I type, sitting mere feet away from a CAS intake worker.
