The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives is seeking to hire a research fellow at its national office in Ottawa. This position is a combination of research and writing, policy analysis, research coordination, and media and communications work. The position requires a strong background in economic and social policy.
Qualifications, experience and skills:
… Graduate level university degree in economics or political economy, and background in quantitative methods and statistics;
… Excellent writing and verbal communication skills including an ability to render policy issues accessible to a general audience.
… Ability to deal effectively with the media and the general public, including a talent for simplifying complex policy issues.
… Ability to understand the public policy milieu and intervene strategically in policy debates.
… Ability to work quickly and effectively, both independently and as part of a team, in an often highly-charged environment.
Duties:
… Research and write short studies, commentaries, articles and op-eds on national economic and social policy issues.
… Conceive and undertake in-depth original research.
… Develop research grant (and other funding) proposals.
… Coordinate research projects sometimes involving teams of researchers.
… Provide analysis and commentary to the media, including press, radio and TV interviews.
… Develop and implement, in conjunction with the Executive Director, effective communication strategies for the Centre's research.
Other:
… Experience working with a progressive non-profit organization is desirable.
… Fluency in French is desirable.

Salary:
This is a unionized position with a salary range of $45,000 to $65,000 and a generous benefits package. Salary will depend on qualifications and experience.
