A rightwing German MP last night faced numerous calls for his resignation after he talked of "the Jews" as a "nation of perpetrators" and alleged they were responsible for the deaths of millions of people during the Russian revolution.

In a speech to his con stituents, Martin Hohmann, a member of Germany's main opposition party, the Christian Democrat Union (CDU), claimed that Jewish people had a "dark side".

http://www.guardian.co.uk/germany/article/0,2763,1075588,00.html

"The Independent" had this to add:

"Mr Hohmann, a right-wing conservative, has frequently been accused of holding extremist views. Two years ago he joined German neo-Nazis in opposing a landmark exhibition which exposed the crimes of the German army during the Second World War. He is also renowned as an opponent of tolerance towards homosexuals. "

Oh, it gets worse. As I understand it, the nutter's argument was:

* Greens are like Bolsheviks.
* Bolsheviks were largely Jews.
* Jewish Bolsheviks were like Nazis.
* Therefore, the modern Green Party in Germany is like the Nazis.
* (Implied) Therefore, Jews are complicit in crimes of Nazi magnitude.

Way to smear the opposition and an entire ethnic group at once, dude. He deserves every bit of the flak he's getting, and then some.

Now a German Army general has got the axe for praising Hohmann's racist comments:

"The head of Germany's special forces has been sacked for allegedly backing an MP who is accused of anti-Semitism.

Defence Minister Peter Struck fired Brigadier General Reinhard Guenzel for apparently praising MP Martin Hohmann.

Mr Hohmann has caused a national row with comments comparing the actions of Jews in the 1917 Russian revolution with those of the Nazis.

General Guenzel is said to have written to Mr Hohmann, praising his "courage"."

I'll start by saying that this guy sucks.

Not exactly germane, but I've always been fascinated by the connection of Fascist-Nazi-type thinking with homophobia and figures of ultra-masculinity. There's been some interesting work done on this in regard to the Nazi regime....

Anyway, please do not follow my digression too far.

What the general actually said was if Germans were collectively responsible for Nazi's, then so too are Jews collectively responsible for Bolsheviks. It's a fair statement, given that jews were responsible for the Bolshevik revolution and subsequent terror.

Why the hysteria? Why is one a fair statement, but not the other?

Hey look! A real antisemite! It's almost a relief, anticipating something useful out of our resident smearer.

BTW, Chaitea, I welcome your proposal that Zundel be allowed to stay in Canada (on that other thread you blitzkrieged), so long as he is forced to move next to me and my 10 hungry pitbulls.

Yikes....It's too late, tonight; to drag the past out into....never mind....

It really is too late to deal with this except the old fashioned way:

Nazis Fuck Off!

Um, what? Yes, I do seem to remember the Soviet regime was especially kind to its Jewish citizens...

NOT.

Isn't there a bridge you should be guarding? (Or jumping off?)

Well, he's out of his party (the Christian Democrats), but

quote:
He cannot be stripped of his parliamentary seat.

Which is, of course, standard in a democracy.

Let's hope that there are lots of people around at the time of the next election to get that seat away from him.

Does Germany have recall provisions?

Incidentally, I find it interesting that he represents Hesse, which is where the Technical University of Darmstadt is located, and also where the Heavy-Ion Beam facility for heavy element research is located.
