I'm too content to answer this question, because I really like where I live. But chat up your dream locales!

My father's ancestral home in Dutchess County, New York. It's a gorgeous old farmhouse that's in the process of being refurbished by my aunt and uncle, and nothing would make me happier than to call it my home.

Probably only a little further north than I am, in the highlands of cape breton.

Although in the winter I may have to migrate to someplace where there isn't any snow.

I think I'd like to live in a bunch of places, for a few years each. If Audra has her way (and if I get a job), I'll move to Halifax after I finish my master's program here in T.O. I quite like it here, actually. Elsewhere in the world, I've always been really curious about Iceland, so a few years in Reykjavik might be cool. And I could go for a year or two in Florence and London. And then I think I'd like to move home to Philly.

At the moment, I'm thinking Montreal, or Halifax, or somewhere pretty in B.C. Other times, I think I just want to hide away in the forest somewhere, where no one goes, and only let a few select people come visit me. But that's only when I feel particularly grouchy.

My wife and I have our eye on an 11 acre island on the West Coast. It's well treed and has deep anchorage on the west side of the island. Cable, hydro and phone are already run out to the property as well as a cottage.
We would build our own home in our own time and should the need fora fancy dinner and night on the town become important, Vancouver is not too far away.

A cruise ship, where I have final say on destinations. Solar and wind powered, of course, with a magical propeller that doesn't hurt dolphins.

Edinburgh, me too. If I were a bit younger and fast access to great medicine weren't a concern, I'd be in a cool green rugged glen, here or in Scotland -- the Kootenays, or Dunkeld in Perthshire.

The only place on Earth better than where I now live would be New Zealand. And since the weather would be the same, there wouldn't be much difference except for flora and fauna, aceeents and the seasons. Okay, so maybe there are quite a few differences after all.

That's for places I would like to LIVE. Places I'd like to visit .. totally different kettle of fish there.

Well, since you bumped and since we're dreaming, right where i am - western Ontario - from March to November; Monserrat (before the eruption) from December 1st to the end of February, with short trips to Quebec, California, BC, Ireland, New Brunswick, Wisconsin and Newfoundland whenever the mood takes me.

Paris, I suppose, because I feel so vital when I'm there. Despite a lot of drawbacks - it is polluted and it would be terrible to have to take the métro for a long commute during the rush hour, as, although it is extremely efficient, it is very crowded.

Definitely in a large city in a Latin-speaking European country.

By the way, Montréal is utterly lovely now but I hope all the Montréal lovers do visit us in February, in the dirty snow...

A friend of mine recently brought back a Village Voice for me ("Hey, I picked this up in Greenwich Village and it was free!"). I was surprised to spot an ad for a Montreal music festival, les FrancoFolies de Montreal, that is apparently "en collaboration avec Bleue Dry"…

I can't recall ever being invited up to Montreal by tourism Quebec through Eye or Now, the local TO weeklies (although I haven't seen last week's editions).

I, quite frankly, am hurt.

I keep seeing ads in the subways for a music festival happening in Chicago later this summer. I was surprised to see them advertising in Toronto, what with the whole SARS scare and all.

i thought those chicago billboards were a bit underhanded. is your tourism industry going in the tank and your health care workers on the point of exhaustion? well, chicago will come to town and try to draw your own citizens away for its music festival.

Bah.. Tourism boards are there for one purpose only: to promote the city or region that is associated with them.

The NY Times I got after 9/11 was bursting at the seams from tourism board ads around the US expressing their deepest condolences.

In between these ads, of course, was the likes of GM asking to keep America strong by buying a car.

Which reminds me, I see a tonne of ads for Northern Ontario (or at least did) and none, pre SARS, for TO.

I suspect you can tell a lot from tourism boards: Quebec prefers NY, Tory Ontario prefers the rural areas, etc.

We have tons of ads in BC for TO. Come, come, come -- One was a radio ac actually kind of funny.

Question: I'm worried about going to Toronto because of SARS.

Answer: Well you should only be worried if you plan to get off the plane, go to an infected hospital and give a SARS patient a full body rub.

HE HE

I think its been highly over-rated, much like mad cow disease. We've also being told to support the beef industry every hour it seems.

ANY PLACE? Although I love Canada, if I ingest too much American Government news errrrrr make that proopoganda - I wish I were on a deserted island.

"Here on Kuba's Island" - I think the concept has been done before.
