Looks like a tough winter coming and Imo a recession is within 18 months.

What about a Miser section added to Babble for Ideas on how to save a buck, could be fun.

Here's some to start if anyone is interested.

Hair spray gets out ink stains on clothes. Just spray, rinse and wash.
I buy BarBQ sauce ,split contents into two bottles and add filtered water from the fridge to give me two bottles.
Also replaced all my lights with the energy saving lightbulbs from Canadian tire, work well. Not a big savings but it all adds up.

Anyone here no how to purchase cheaper meats and veggies? I check out Loblaws,Loeb,Giant tiger etc.
But is it cheaper to buy from the local private side street stands,or can you get produce directly from farmers?

I wonder how much the Yanks are paying for our gas, gasoline, power and oil ?. You'd think all these American-based companies here would cut us a break on our natural resources once in a while.

they are. they're letting us pay them for some of our gas.they could just let us freeze in the dark.
we really have to start nationalizing and first up should be seizing windfall profits caused by this spike, and using it to subsidize LICO qualified families before they're eating dog food and the number of stray house pets starts falling.

Oatmeal.

Eat it for breakfast. Add it too ground meat dishes to make it seem like you're eating more meat than you actually are (as in black puddings and haggis type concoctions), start baking with it. Use it with butter and savoury 'n' sage to top a savoury casserole. Rich in fibre and cheap almost everywhere.

My main way of cutting food costs (it's very expensive here) has involved oatmeal, and also switching to apples (not my favourite fruit, but cheaper), and cutting out alcohol.

Anyway, you can always feed more people for cheap by stretching recipes with oatmeal.

I have hot oatmeal on these cold mornings we're now having (was 8C last night) and make oatmeal/raisin cookies to snack on during the day.

20 ft of fish line, a treble hook and stale bread, tie the line to a tree in wascana park, bait the hook, and eat goose for two weeks.
if you get caught ,plead guilty and eat and sleep in comfort for a month.
think outside the box

Or do as they do in Khyrgystan during winter since they've been paying market prices for Russian gas: Haul the furniture outside and build communal bonfires. Don a second payer, er pair of woolens and roast no-name marshmallows while singing the hymn of the Soviet Union. At some point, foreign occupation by the enemies of good might be less expensive for us than this current situation.

Tis true.

kurichina. I am surprised at you.

And after that lovely hymn to oatmeal that you just wrote. I should have thought that the Scots would also have introduced you to Colcannon potatoes (see recipe on the Veggie thread under Body and Soul), which is an even better way to eat cabbage.

Socialism at it's best. Personally, I prefer having a gas furnace.
