quote:The President of Taiwan says that the relationship the island nation has with the United States is like the message in "Brokeback Mountain", the Academy Award nominated film by Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee about two cowboys in love.
"It motivates us...to understand all of us are bound to make difficult decisions in life, yet we must strive to dispel prejudice...and seek ways to reconcile and cooperate with one another," President Chen Shui-bian told a gathering of more than 500 American business leaders in Taipei.
"There is a 'Brokeback Mountain' in each and every one of us."
[...]
While touting his government's economic policies he made no mention of his plan for unification with the People's Republic of China, something the U.S. opposes.
"Brokeback Mountain" has been playing to packed theaters in Taiwan where Ang Lee is highly revered.
LOL I wonder if he thinks this message will play well in Washington, or if anyone will actually even tell the Cretin-in-Chief about this...

uh, except that the current president has no plans to unify with china. quite the opposite, it's his plan to disband the unification council that's annoying the u.s.

For a country that's reasonably educated and affluent, it's sort of disturbing that Taiwan's people tend to enjoy being sandwiched between fascist superpowers.

They were taken over by fascists in Chiang Kai Chek's time and made home to the World Anti-communist League. That group of nuts funded the contras and right-wing death squads in Latin America.
I think there is pressure from Taiwan's blue block opposition to strengthen ties with the mainland. They want a share of the fastest growing economy in the world.
