Urgent Solidarity Appeal!

February 16, 2002

It is urgent to send a letter to Nigerian authorities in favour of Safya
HUSSEINI TUNGAR-TUDU, a young Nigerian woman condemned to death in her
country for becoming pregnant and giving birth to her child , without a
husband. An act such as this is considered serious within fundamentalist
Islamic law, and is designated as a crime within the penal code.

If there is no strong international pressure within the next month, maybe a
bit more, Safya will be placed in a pit, then half buried and finally
stoned to death by the local people of her village. Presently, Safya has
enclosed herself within her home determined to nurse her child, an act
which has become synonymous with the death penalty. She will be able to
nurse the infant for a few more weeks, then she will be led to the pit and
massacred (this is confirmed by Amnesty International).

We can do something! You must write the Ambassador of Nigeria and ask that
the President of the Nigerian Republic grant her a pardon. But we need
these letters to flood in by the hundreds. It is for this reason that I am
asking you to forward this appeal to your friends (and don't forget about
those who don't have e-mail) and to write to the following Embassy. If you
don't do so quickly there is a great risk that we will have intervened too
late. Another detail, as is often the case in this sort of affair: the
father of the child was let go for lack of proof.

"We can not remain at the edge of the grave in contemplating the last
detail of this intolerance, this ignorance and this lie!" We must make a
collective gesture of solidarity by mailing the following letter to:

Embassy of Nigeria
295 Metcalfe Street
Ottawa, Ontario
K2P 1R9

Fax: 613-236-0529
Phone numbers: 613-236-0521 and 613-234-3266
