'There was a lot of racist abuse once people detected from our accents that we weren't English. I saw girls reduced to tears by it.' Pooja Chopra, 29, from Delhi, who spent two years fielding calls for BT Cellnet and America Online, faced similar abuse. 'People would say, "You're a Paki, I don't want to talk to you, pass me to someone who can speak my language".

I was interested to see which forum this thread was placed in. The present one is as appropriate as any. I half expected to find it in the racism forum, and that could be appropriate. On the other hand, Consumption and Labour could be appropriate. I, for one, go out of my way to purchase and subscribe to "Canadian". When I find that my intent has been thwarted by such "off-shoring", yes, it is annoying, and yes I do often refuse to deal with the off-shore. I think I, again, go out of my way to not offend. I always explain that my "beef" is with the corporation, not the person I'm talking to. I wish him/her the best, but explain that I think the employer is being deceitful. I almost never get the impression that there are any hard feelings.
