Clashes mark passage of pension reform in Mexico

quote:
Clashes between demonstrators and security personnel occurred outside Mexico's Senate after the upper house of Congress passed landmark reforms of the government pension system.

The unrest came Tuesday night as thousands of civil servants protested the reforms after security forces surrounded the legislative building ahead of the 85-32 vote.

The legislation, which was approved last week in the Chamber of Deputies, would raise the age of retirement and set up individual accounts for pensioners in the pension system for government workers.

The bill must still be signed into law by President Felipe Calderon, who has made it a major part of his economic reform package.

It's time we start following developments like these more closely considering the plans for "deep integration".

In NZ they have raised the pension age, thats because the average age of NZ'ers is getting older due to our lower birth rate. We realise the Govt will get seroiusly short of money if it needs to pay the pension to huge numbers of fit people in their 60's. The age has gradually gone up from 60 to 65, over the last 10 years. My parents were caught in this getting their pension at 62 and 63 respectivly. Even they don't decry it too much as we all realise it is necessary, and we all realise that people in their 60's are a lot fitter than they were 20 or 40 years ago. Isn't it the same situation in Mexico, except perhaps for poorer publicity?
