The $2 Trillion Nightmare

quote:
... By 2017, we estimate that the national debt will have increased, just because of the war, by some $2 trillion.”

The math appears a little conservative in calculating a two trillion dollar tab, looking toward the 2017 horizon, considering that thus far, in nearly 5 years of war, the article notes that almost 1 trillion in debt has been added due to the war.

Both men talked about large opportunities lost because of the money poured into the war. “For a fraction of the cost of this war,” said Mr. Stiglitz, “we could have put Social Security on a sound footing for the next half-century or more.”

Does Stiglitz believe Democrats are not warmongering plutocrats ? It takes two old line parties to tango. And he should know. His advice for spending on poverty reduction fell on deaf ears during the roaring 90's.
