Babblers will remember that, this January, Condoleeza Rice and company rejected the suggestion that they speak with Iran about anything.

Not until they stop developing nuclear power, she said. Anything else would be a defeat.

So yesterday, even though Iran continues to develop nuclear power, the US met with Iran. NAd Iran said the US could withdraw, if Iran gets to control the Iraqi Army and police.

quote:
the Iranian diplomat — formerly a top official in the elite Revolutionary Guards Quds Force — said he had offered to train and equip the Iraqi army and police to create "a new military and security structure" for Iraq.

Kazemi said U.S. efforts to rebuild those forces were inadequate to handle the chaos in Iraq, for which he said Washington bore sole responsibility. He said he also offered to provide what assistance Iran could in rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure, which he said had been "demolished by the American invaders."

Bush and Co. have been taking some criticism from some in their own party about disregarding the recommendations of the Baker/Hamilton report on the way ahead in Iraq. Talking with Iraq's neighbors was one of the points raised. It's highly doubtful that any moves toward discussion with Iran will achieve anything other than some propaganda for both sides. For Bush, when the talks between their respective ambassadors to Iraq amount to nothing, he can say they've tried dialogue and got nothing from Iran that could be trusted. I believe it's being engineered for propaganda rather than anything substantive. The only surprise really is why the Iranians bothered to show up.
