Except it isn't. They're building a hotel on the site of his 'lair', not reusing the original building, which was leveled by bombers.

You'd think from the reaction that Hitler and his gang didn't actually exist in the world. Poking around the other main Nazi site (the bunker, Nuremberg, the chancellery), it would seem that most have either been levelled and turned into parks, or are still standing, unfinished and unused. So about all you can accuse them of is reusing a scenic location.

Surely there are some other Nazi site(s) around that have been reused or are still being used?

Actually quite a few of the buildings there are still up and used for tours (see "The Hitler Virus" for a good tour of one).

Most buildings have been leveled or are being used as something else because they were relatively benign buildings during the Hitler era

Hmmmn. There has been a well-known restaurant -- in an original building -- up there for some time. I'd like to see a map of the original that shows what was orginally where, what was levelled, and what is where now.

The Austrian government's notion of how to keep out the neo-Nazis -- make it expensive! only for rich tourists! -- left me rolling in the aisles ...

Skdadl - sorry, I'm being lagatta the She-Wolf of editors here - it is on the German side, in southern Bavaria. "The new hotel, the Intercontinental Resort Berchtesgaden, will open on the Obersalzberg mountaintop to guests on March 1, the Bavarian Finance Ministry said Thursday". Evidently you can see the Austrian side of the river from it. Hitler was from that area, on the Austrian side, and alas there were a lot of Nazis from both Bavaria (Munich Beer-Garden uprising) and Upper Austria...

That said, I know a fellow who lives in that area, and I assure you he is VERY far from that outlook. Coming from Alberta you rightly warned of stupid stereotypes about regions and jurisdictions...

No, I'm NOT comparing the Reformatories with the Nazis, please!

I don't think I'd feel very comfortable in that hotel. The location is downright creepy, and the cost of "luxury" would be sure to give me anxiety.

Point taken, lagatta. The Bavarian authorities, Bavarian, not Austrian ... got it!

But still. They think that making it expensive will keep the neo-Nazis out! Yeee!

Friday afternoon seems to be my time for googling for interesting images, and in keeping with that tradition (now at least one week old) I have stumbled upon this extraordinary resource. It is part of a larger site called The Third Reich in Ruins, much of which is also interesting, but the photo galleries of all the complexes and buildings on the Obersalzberg are the most rich and disturbing.

If you run through all the links at the top of the page, you will gain a good grasp of what was where, what remains, and how things are being used now -- the plans for the new hotel are even included somewhere, although that seems a sad violation of the landscape.

The period photos, especially of Eva Braun, her sister/s, and her friends, left me feeling deeply sad. The perverse domesticity of the powerful -- I barely know how to think of it.
