His general conclusion (all countries are homogenizing into modern liberal democratic ones as progress marches on, hurrah) seems forced & wrong, but this is an interesting column nonetheless. Apparently Taiwan is also considering legalizing same-sex marriage. Let's get this country into the UN!

Marcus Gee always strikes me as an adolescent who, upon getting some new information, thinks he's discovered something novel. I mean, it's great that gays in Taiwan are feeling freer to express themselves openly, but Asian societies, if not in theory, have always been a bit more tolerant of homosexuality (espcially male homosexuality) in practice. Sort of "if you don't talk about it, we'll leave you alone" kind of attitude.
