Lorie Kane believes members of the LPGA Tour already have a universal language - golf.

But the LPGA thinks differently. It will require golfers to speak English starting in 2009, with players who have been members for two years facing suspension if they can't pass an oral evaluation of English skills.

There are 121 international players from 26 countries on the LPGA Tour, including 45 players from South Korea. With such diversity, the tour sees the policy as a necessary step for its players.

"Why now? Athletes now have more responsibilities and we want to help their professional development," deputy commissioner Libba Galloway told The Associated Press. "There are more fans, more media and more sponsors. We want to help our athletes as best we can succeed off the golf course as well as on it."

The international players have had no shortage of success on the course.

Sixteen of the top-20 current money earners were born outside of the United States. Eight of those women are South Korean followed by two Swedes, two Australians, a Mexican, a Norwegian, a Brazilian and a Taiwanese.

This is absolutely astounding. So will the NHL follow suite and tell all those Russkies they have to speak better English. And what about those unilingual French speakers in hockey and other sports. Everyone should be forced to speak American.

But you know this stupidity is aimed directly at Korean athletes who are out shooting white middle class American women. That must be stopped until they at least sound like white middle class Americans when interviewed. This sure looks blatantly racist.

I heard about this today...Damn, I've heard of rolling back the clock, but you might as well just put 'coloured' signs over the drinking fountains at Augusta.

Just heard on Global News that a Vancouver golf course has now implimented a new rule regarding the speaking of english. No english no membership.

COQUITLAM -- A prominent private Vancouver-area golf club has developed an English-language-only policy for its prospective members, similar to the one the LPGA Tour has said it plans to implement for its international players.

Its a bit hard to see how they can get away with this...

And if its Canadians doing the discrimination based on language you'd think we could at least agree on discriminating against those who can't speak English OR French...

It will make for an interesting case if someone pursues it. Seems to me a simple accommodation for people paying $65,000 to join would be Korean translation of the rules and regulations of the club. Korean in Coquitlam is the second language behind English of languages spoken at home. There are more Chinese speakers but not as many Chinese families that speak either Chinese language at home.

Not many people in BC care about French except as it relates to the constitutional right of French Canadians to service by the federal government in French. That English French thing is a Central Canada concern not a BC concern.

French in Metro Vancouver is spoken by less people than those who speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Punjabi, German, Italian, Spanish, Tagalog. Even in Coquitlam which includes the old historic French community of Maillardville the number of French speakers is less than both Chinese languages and Korean and in fact French comes in in eighth place of Mother Tongues and not in the top ten of languages spoken at home.

Kropotkin: thanks for elaborating on what I believed to be the case; it is clear from your description that they could have a bilingual discrimination policy with virtually no effect on the unilingual nature of the club or the intent to ward against immigrants, so it should be simple enough

Indeed they could but including French is not even thought about because it is such a minor language in this area. I know even 20 years ago one of my Montreal cousins and her spouse lived in Vancouver for a few years and it came as a shock to them that virtually nothing was available in French. It has gotten even less important in the last couple of decades since no one speaks it. Although I will say that politicians regularly say about 5 to 10 words "en francais" just to show they can. I have heard that Jack was getting better in French. I know when I heard him a couple of years ago I was concerned because when he was speaking I could understand him. What that told me was he was speaking far slower than any "real" French speaker.
