Anyone here going to the NL NDP convention coming up May 2-4?
I am flying all the way to St John's from Vancouver to attend the convention.
I'd love to meet any Babblers who will be there.

If you're in Newfoundland and are coming to the NDP convention this weekend, or if you just want to meet me, please send me a message.
Thanks!

Dana, tell us how it goes. I'm very interested in how the convention develops and in how the party will attempt to strategize and differentiate itself from the the other parties in the era of an almost decimated Liberals and of Viceroy Williams.

Well it is the smallest convention I have been to, with about 50 people in attendance. That's both because it's a small province, and because the NDP is not very strong here.
The NDP holds one seat in the house here. Lorraine Michael, party leader, is the only elected NDPer.
There hasn't been anything too contentious or divisive in terms o resolutions. I have had a decent reception, I had the chance to chat to some of the locals, and I've been invited to return in the fall to speak to a student group about my work with End Prohibition.
I'll write another update tomorrow.

Had I known about it beforehand, I'd have probably gone. Damn.

I am always surprised at the lack of response to my NDP convention posts on Babble. I figured more people from these forums would be interested in going to conventions and having a say in party policy.
The convention worked out great for me. I was invited to give a short talk to the whole convention which I have never had the chance to do before. The smaller size made things more informal and easier for me to meet everyone.

I don't know about morale, but travelling to conventions is expensive (unless it's covered) and time consuming from work and family. I'm retired, but simply don't have the $$$ to travel. I'll go to any convention if my expenses are fully covered.

There's pretty much no-one else other than Jack Layton that travels to every provincial NDP convention like I do. And you're right, it is expensive and time consuming.
But for a left-wing and NDP-friendly discussion forum, I figured there should be more people from here that attend at least their own provincial conventions.
The next federal NDP convention is in the fall, to be held in Halifax. That will be quite a journey for most party members to get there.
