South Africa's president has provoked anger after saying he would beat his sister if she told him she had fallen in love with an opposition leader.

Violence against women is not a joke, Thabo. Of course, neither is AIDS, but you laughed at that, too.

Mbeki's a buffoon.

Hopefully Mandela will abandon him like Lee did to Lien in Taiwan.

What's the left saying in S.A.? (COSATU, and I think the SACP was the only CP in the world that grew when the Berlin Wall came down, etc.)

Anyone a close follower of the S.A. political scene these days?

COSATU's position on April 14 electionsDespite criticisms, it looks like COSATU is still backing the ANC in the elections.

When I lived in Cape Town, there was a lot of talk about the SACP and COSATU backing some sort of "Workers Party" to challenge the ANC from the left. But that was mostly among white liberals. The ANC "owns" (their term) the votes of a majority of poor rural Africans, and will continue to do so for at least one more election.

There was also some discussion at that time (around a year ago) of prominent activists like Zackie Achmat of TAC seeking office within the ANC, but not much came of it. More likely is a continued drift rightward under Mbeki's successor (probably Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma).
