A man convicted of adultery was stoned to death last week in a village in northern Iran, an Iranian judiciary spokesman said Tuesday, the first time in years that the country has confirmed such an execution.

Jafar Kiani was stoned to death Thursday in Aghchekand, 200 kilometers (124 miles) west of Tehran, said spokesman Ali Reza Jamshidi.

Death sentences are carried out in Iran after they are upheld by the Supreme Court. Under Iran's Islamic law, adultery is punishable by stoning.

Jamshidi did not elaborate on how the stoning was carried out. Under Islamic rulings, a man is usually buried up to his waist, while a woman is buried up to her neck with her hands also buried. Those carrying out the verdict then throw stones until the condemned dies.

Sick and twisted.

I notice that they focused on Norway's response to the incident in the article. Is it just that they are the only ones in the international community to respond to this, or does Norway have some sort of special tie to this event. (E.g. is the victim Norweigan as well?)

I noticed that the couple, who committed the heinous offence of adultery, "had reportedly been in custody for eleven years" prior to the man being stoned to death.

And it seems that the woman's sentence of death by stoning has not yet occurred.

Wouldn't it be nice if all "progressive" people on babble would denounce Iran for this cruel and inhuman act? Or at least ask Iran not to stone her to death?

Is there some danger from "progressive" people agreeing with this insanity that I missed? If it will make you feel better if I state the obvious? Here you go:

Iran needs to be told that violating human rights is not acceptable. That 11 years in prison for adultery is a grotesque miscarriage of justice and stoning people for any crime is an abomination. When they do shit like this it confuses "progressives" who think that Iran is the bastion of freedom and justice in the Middle East. Cause progressive just hate have their blinkers removed on that score.

Happy?

I think Jeff ought to have phrased that as a call to action rather than simple denunciation. The post was not so maladroit as to call for the rolling of the eyes.

Well, perhaps if he'd left out the extra special quote marks around progressives and all of oh, I don't know all of babble I might have resisted the entirely deserved eye rollies.

And this, as we see, is what happens when people troll at the very beginning of a thread with snarkiness. Your post was fine up to the last sentence, Jeff. How about refraining next time.
