In the Guardian: Britain Defies US with Funding to Boost Safe Abortion Services
quote:
The British government will today publicly defy the United States by giving money for safe abortion services in developing countries to organisations that have been cut off from American funding.

Nearly 70,000 women and girls died last year because they went to back-street abortionists. Hundreds of thousands of others suffered serious injuries.

Critics of America's aid policy say some might have lived if the US had not withdrawn funding from clinics that provide safe services - or that simply tell women where to find them...

Nice to that the UK is willing to fill the gap. I also read that they were hoping other countries, including Canada, would help with the shortfall. With the present Conservative gov't I think that is doubtful.

That meme is getting seriously play early on:

quote:
The cabinet - 27 members, including the prime minister - marks another deliberate step toward the pragmatic middle and away from the new Conservative party's ideological roots, say a trio of experts.

All the hue and cry over floor-crossing Liberal David Emerson and unelected, soon-to-be- senator Michael Fortier vaulting straight onto the Tory front bench merely drives home the point.

"This seems to be a clear nod toward quite a pragmatic, centrist style of government," said Allan Tupper, a political scientist at the University of British Columbia.

Crappy link but it will be up on more MS sites soon.

Congratulations to the brits on this specific initiative. Doesn't make up for the Blair foreign invasion record, in my mind, but it is positive for some women out there.

(Isn't it ironic: As even staunch allies such as Blair take steps to distance themselves from Bush -- canada starts up the old, reach around.)

a dated, but still useful, primer on international aid and abortion by DFID:

quote:
Many millions of women still do not have access to good quality contraception, or have no control over the circumstances in which
they become pregnant, and therefore resort to abortion to end an unwanted pregnancy. Many women die as a result; many more are permanently injured.

It is unlikely that the International Development Target to lower maternal mortality by three-quarters by 2015 will be reached without progress in addressing unsafe abortion.

Around 13% of all maternal deaths are caused by unsafe abortion.
