an open letter to SUV owners, everywhere, brothers , i write this in sorrow, fully confessing that I have been letting down the side. i haven't attacked anyone about their sexual orientation, I used my explorer on the Habitat for Humanity house, and I fund raised for Dollar against Diabetes. i joined council for canadians, and the ndp. i haven't managed to hit ,or injure anyone with my truck, and i'm far too good-natured while driving.not to mention that i sometimes don't drive (i shudder to admit it) for days. i'll try to modify my behavior, now that ,luckily the popular opinion of SUV drivers has been brought to my attention, once again. perhaps i'll take up drunken-driving and drive-by shooting ,in school zones. again, sorry to have broken the rules on suv ownership.

More Likely to . . . =/= the Majority of SUV drivers do . . .But yeah, those are questionable, and not terribly enlightening, statistics. [ 28 September 2005: Message edited by: Andrew_Jay ]

Obviously, this is a meaningless correlation. It reminds me of the statistic that showed that if you speak both French and English in Quebec, you are likely to make less money than if you speak English alone. Thus, speaking French causes a loss of income. Not.

quote: The study, by the Australia Institute, indicates the average 4WD driver is a male city dweller in his late 40s or 50s, and far from cool.
I wonder how they measured the "cool" factor? quote: Although most SUV drivers are men, the study also looked at women who drive four-wheel-vehicles. Unlike their male counterparts they are cool. They tended to be in their 30s or early 40s, were materialistic and "love to shop".
Ooops. Here it's explained. Materialism and a desire to shop. Some interesting methodology.

If you'd clicked on the link at the top, Magoo, you'd have seen that line was a follow-up to the initial paragraph, and then you would have had your answer...
quote: The ad shows a ruggedly handsome man behind the wheel of a four-wheel-drive all terrain vehicle, portaging a river, climbing a rocky hill. He's hip, urbane, and a trendsetter. But a new study shows the guy in the ad bears little resemblance to the men who buy SUVs.
The study, by the Australia Institute, indicates the average 4WD driver is a male city dweller in his late 40s or 50s, and far from cool.
But to paraphrase a former USian Chief Justice, "I might not be able to define 'cool', but I know it when I see it." [ 28 September 2005: Message edited by: Hephaestion ]
