And the newspeak word for today is 'compellence' quote: Recent disinformation by the western media about Russia starting a new Cold War not only masks the threat of a US Anti-Ballistic Missile shield deployment but, as always, projects the blame on the victim, Russia. The US missile shield must be understood in the context of its geo-strategic nuclear deployment. Far from being defensive, its ultimate purpose is to obtain such an unassailable advantage over any other nuclear power as to be able to threaten any would-be opponent with nuclear extinction if it were not to comply with the wishes of the US.
The Russkies don't need arctic oil and gas. They want an expanded buffer zone for their submarines as a counter-threat to ABMs in Eastern Europe. Our corporate-sponsored MSM is conveniently not paying attention again.

Russia has a longstanding friendship with India which is being challenged by the neoliberal tilt of the Indian government and its elite's over fondness (putting it mildly) for Americanism. I think Russia's return is a good thing. The US never ever abandoned its cold war posture and now has enough first strike capability to completely annihilate both the Russian and Chinese nukes, without them even getting in a retaliatory strike. This complete supremacy is due in large part to Russia's deterrent collapse through the 1990s. With their complete abandonment of the ABM, and their move to weaponize space, the US has gone completely rogue to make up for its economic decline. Ah, the end time cometh and the beast prepares itself. [ 18 August 2007: Message edited by: ceti ]

Shanghai Cooperation OrganisationAugust 11, 2007 - The Peace Mission 2007 antiterrorist joint exercise of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) started in Tchebarkul, Volga-Urals Military District. The Peace Mission 2007 opening ceremony took place at the Tchebarkul training ground. “Per se this is the first such training as units from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan did not take part in the joint training on August 6 as they arrived a day later and only observed the exercises,” Colonel Igor Konashenkov said. He also added that airborne troops landing operation will not be executed because of weather. But the Russian AF will enable six Il-76 transport planes, eighti Su-25 battleplanes, 12 Mi-24 and 12 Mi-8 helicopters. China will provide six Il-76 aircraft, eight battleplanes, 24 helicopters (and 8 in reserve). Peace Mission 2007 will involve all six SCO countries (Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), nearly 6,000 troops and 100 aircraft.
