The workers appear to have several good options.

A friend of mine was on the exec of the union at U of G for years, and resigned shortly after the USW came on board. He was one of the ones who pushed for them to come to Guelph.
He said that the politics involved was just terrible, people wanting power within the union, and pushing their own agendas.
Big government, big business and big unions all scare me...

Says here that the MUSA Representative Council has unanimously recommended CAW as the union to affiliate with: MUSA President's Report to the Annual General Meeting, Oct. 19, 2005

It also says here, though, that the Affiliation Committee was supposed to present a short-list to the members of three unions, with the members making the final decision: Affiliation Investigation Committee Background.

Anyone know if there are going to be six unions on the ballot next month, three unions, or just one?

My understanding is that there will be six (as CUPE Reformer noted above):

CAW
CUPE
OPSEU
OSSTF
PSAC
USWA

(These are listed in alphabetical order--wouldn't want to betray my own views on which union MUSA should join!)

correction - make that "six" unions, not eight.

The second piece I linked from the website said that the Affiliation Committee was supposed to narrow the choices down to three. And the President's report trashed OPSEU and OSSTF pretty badly, so I wasn't sure if they were still in the picture or not.

Has anyone tried to survey the general membership? I had figured that MUSA would go with the Steelworkers, being in Hamilton and all. But a unanimous recommendation from the representatives surely must carry a lot of weight for the CAW.

The original plan, I believe, was to narrow the choices down to three but this was obviously revised in the past year or so. This may have been at the urging of the CLC but I'm not certain about that.

I think a lot of people, including yours truly, were surprised that the endorsement didn't go to Steel.

I was at the membership meeting that the MUSA president talks about in her report. (I was asked to attend to help staff one of the break-out rooms for my own union.) Although I would disagree with other issues MUSA's president addresses, OPSEU didn't show and OSSTF's leader did make a fairly pointed speech about the nature of the affiliation process. It is my understanding that both OSSTF and OPSEU remain on the ballot.

(You may already know this but OPSEU attempted to organize MUSA several years back before they became an official union.)

I know several MUSA members but not a broad enough segment to be able to speculate as to how the vote will go.
