For the second time in recent weeks, the US State Dept. has asked Israel to foreswear nuclear weapons, as the Ukraine and South Africa have. My source is antiwar.com; go to archives and click on Sunday.

When I first read this I was gobsmacked. The US never uses language acknowledging Israel's nukes. Now I think this is an inoculation; the State Dept. wants to be on record as an even-handed arbitor of hostile regimes, but Condi isn't the author of the policy. I think Scott Ritter's right, and Iran will be hit this summer.

The question is what will they do about when Israel ignores them? Nothing.

Threats, sanctions, war, and violence is reserved for Islamic nations and/or non-white nations only.

It's quite annoying that UN resolutions against Israel are never enforced while resolutions against, say, Iraq or Libya are. Double standard when it comes to WMDs?

How can the State Dept. affect a seachange without the authorship of the Secretary? Does Condi need wiggle-room, here? Powell would have been front and center with such a policy.

I think if I were Israel, or any other country asked by the US to "forswear nukes", my response would be, "Certainly, right after you do."

In what world. The one made entirely of shrimp? 'Cause that would get boring.

Aw, yes but the difference is, the US supplies Israel with WMD's. They know they have them because they gave them to them.
