I can't find the other thread where we were talking about this, so I'll post this here. The jury for Warren Jeffs will continue deliberations on Monday.
This is a really interesting case, legally. You'd think it would be slam-dunk, but I was watching some commentary on CNN yesterday where they were talking about some of the complications of the case.
He's being charged with being an accomplice to rape. But they never charged the guy who actually raped the woman (she was 14 when she was "married" to a 19 year-old, and they consummated the marriage after Jeffs married them and told them to "be fruitful" or whatever).
So, he's an accomplice to a rape that hasn't been prosecuted. Seems like a strange way to go about it. Commentators are saying it's because it's Jeffs they want, not the brainwashed 19 year-old. But you'd think in that case they'd charge both the rapist AND Jeffs, and perhaps try and get the guy who actually raped the girl to roll over on Jeffs in exchange for immunity or something.
Common sense says that this guy Jeffs is guilty, and exiles from the community are saying this is one of many, many horrific things this guy has done or counselled others to do. But of course, everyone in the cult are too brainwashed to come forward and testify, and many who have left are too scared, both for themselves and for family who might still be there.
What an awful situation.
