Canadian soldiers kill Afghan police officer

quote:
The Canadians fired on a truckload of armed men who approached an artillery position west of Kandahar "at high speed," Col. Fred Lewis told reporters on Saturday. Four others travelling in the vehicle were hurt, he said.

A short time later, a motorcyle carrying two people approached the same position at high speed, Canadian officials said. Canadian soldiers once again opened fire, wounding both motorcyclists.

"It would appear that Canadian soldiers reacted in self-defence in both incidents, one of which was regrettably a friendly force on friendly force engagement," Lewis said.

"I think the key here is that these Afghan national security force members were not in uniform," he said.

Pretty severe penalty for being out-of-uniform, even by the high standards of our highly trained, highly ethical Canadian soldiers.

These two incidents shed new light on last week's report of the killing of a 10-year-old child. At the time, there had been no report of whether he was in or out of uniform.

These shootings are not the problem, they are symptoms. The problem is being there in the first place.

These troops are in a life and death situation where a wrong split second decision could render one hamburger.

When they start shooting those not approaching them at high speed, and without adequate warning, then we have a another problem in addition.

The people really responsible for these civilian deaths are the government officials who sent the troops there in the first place, and they should have to answer for it.

I've amended the thread title based on this slightly different account in the Globe. I suppose it will take a while before the MSM agree on the details of what happened.

Meanwhile, I find it remarkable that various Canadian spokespersons would blame the behaviour of the Afghan National Police for such incidents. Who is training them anyway??

These situation can be extremely confusing, even to those involved. Making an early judgement is a risky business at best.

The real point to be made here is why are we in a situation in the first place where this can happen. If we were not there in the first place we would not be shooting people by mistake. At the end of the day we can add the lives of these friendlies who we killed to the list of lives wasted in an adventure we have no reasonable business being involved in.

14 Britons killed in Afghan plane crash

quote:
The aircraft belonged to Nato-led international force against the Taleban.

UK Defence Secretary Des Browne said "all indications are that this was a terrible accident".

I believe God brought down this plane as punishment for invading Afghanistan and killing innocent Afghans.

But even if that's not right, this is no accident. The British should get the hell out of Afghanistan and Iraq before they all die. If they care about their young people, which is not at all evident.

The same goes for Canada, of course.
