Provocative T-shirt show banned in Poland quote: The exhibition featured Polish personalities wearing T-shirts with slogans that refer to subjects which are normally taboo in Roman Catholic Poland, such as "I am gay", "I'm Jewish", "I'm Arab," "I masturbate" and "I have my period.""To write 'I've got Aids' or 'I've had an abortion' on a T-shirt, you would have to be devoid of all human feelings," the bishop of Lublin, Jozef Zycinski, said.
"Devoid of all human feelings"? This coming from someone who's worked to silence those fighting the proliferation of AIDS? Gah.

quote: The texts printed on the T-shirts could have offended the feelings and beliefs of many people," Wieslaw Kaminski, president of UMCS University in the southeastern city of Lublin, was quoted by the Rzeczpospolita daily as saying
And of course "many people" = "many religious people". Well, best cancel the show then. The most important thing is that religious jackoffs aren't offended ever again. We must tiptoe carefully around their precious feelings.

They aren't pictures, they're words. In that respect, babble just reprinted seven of them. But then this isn't the first time babble has printed something just to get a reaction, eh?

But what is shocking in this story is not that someone in the very right-wing Catholic Church in Poland said something idiotic, but the University president's muzzling of free expression: quote: A university in Poland has banned an exhibition of T-shirts bearing slogans such as "I didn't cry when the Pope died" and "I've got Aids," saying the show was too provocative, press reports said on Tuesday."The texts printed on the T-shirts could have offended the feelings and beliefs of many people," Wieslaw Kaminski, president of UMCS University in the southeastern city of Lublin, was quoted by the Rzeczpospolita daily as saying.
And no, I don't think it is quite the same as the Danish Muhammad cartoons: Catholicism is the majority religion in Poland and the Church is closely tied to the ruling coalition. If a Polish newspaper were to print caricatures offensive to, say, Roma, or the remnants of the Jewish community, that would be a better parallel.
