This is from a story today on possible bank mergers:
quote:
Some members of the NDP, long a critic of bank mergers, have suggested their opposition has thawed, especially with the dramatic growth in credit unions.

Is this true? Are we giving up this fight? All I can say is there is no sign of "dramatic growth in credit unions" where I live.

All it says is that "some members of the NDP" say their opposition has thawed. Hardly the same as saying it's no longer party policy, or even that a resolution has been put forward at a convention. "Some members" of the NDP oppose SSM and/or abortion, favour capital punishment, etc, but that doesn't mean it's time to panic.

It is still our policy. But if it isn't a priority and we don't put up a fight, the mergers will happen. Our policy books are full of policy we do nothing about, and it looks like our bank mergers policy could be one of them.

My point is, based on that single sentence that names nobody, it's far from clear that it's no longer a priority. It tells us almost nothing. If it quoted one of our MPs as saying that, there'd be a lot more to worry about.

If you read the whole article, the situation looks ominous. I want reassurance from none other than Jack Layton himself that he will fight this tooth and nail. I'll wait to see what his response is.

Fair enough. I'm just saying, don't panic based on a largely empty line in the article.

Privateer, I'll be interested in seeing any response you get, but meanwhile here's some proof that the party has NOT abandonned its stance against bank mergers:
quote:
30. Prevent the merger of banks with each other or with federally incorporated bodies to create one bank.

the credit unions here in Saskatchewan are merging faster than you can say merge.

I have found, however, that they are doing extremely good at maintaining local staff and creating very powerful financial institutions based on their collective member accounts.

I hope, however, that they do not lose their socialist roots in the process. Credit unions were established becuase the banks didn't care about the poor who needed loans to do community development etc. While I haven't seen traces of that yet, and I've actually found my new Affinity credit union to be wonderful, I'm just always worried.

the bigger issue is this: while we've long since abandoned nationalising the financial institutions, if we're not fighting mergers, there's going to be a lot of people out of their work.
