As March 8 approaches I am dismayed by my lack of inspiration this year. Usually I write articles to submit around - of course, full of profound insights. But I find myself uninspired in spite of the evidence of mysogyny around me and throughout the world.

I no longer attend rallys, protests or marches - and I'm out of the speakers loop so no longer am invited to share my words of wisdom. I have three sons and no daughters in my life.

Tell me - what's an old feminist broad to do to celebrate the day?

How about taking a couple of young women out to celebrate. I find a lot of inspiration these days from young people female and male. The most important legacy of feminism is this new generation which is really started to challenge gender roles in a significant way.l

So do we all go to feminist hell if we don't know what IWD is?

Femwriter, can you find a way to involve your sons in the celebration? Take them to see a display of women's art or hey, have them serve you breakfast in bed or something...

Great suggestions. Feminist Hell? Is that Ontario since the invasion of the Common Sense Revolution?

I particularly like the idea of doing something with young women. I have surrounded myself it seems these days with twenty-something women who have brought me so much joy and include me in their lives (even though I am older than some of their mothers). The love hearing my stories of the 80's and 90's women's movement. At least I think they love them!?

I have always included my sons in women's events - my older boys are now 24 and 22 and will undoubtedly call me or send flowers bless their hearts. My youngest is only 7 and I don't relish his meals but maybe I could teach him some stuff about women.

Thanks everyone.

Feminist Hell = Ontario since Harris

HAHAHAHA!

Exactly, Femwriter! Well, I'm already here, so I guess I don't have to worry about it too much. Heh.

When is International Women's Day anyhow?

Oh, duh. Sorry, you mention it in your opening post. Never mind.

Well, if I had a job, and were old enough to drive, I'd probably take some people three times my age to the movies, or whatever else was going on around town. Hell, maybe I'd drive down to Toronto, or Kingston and celebrate But I lack the money and driving skills to do that, unfortunately.

Ahem. Are you implying that you know a woman THREE TIMES your age in Kingston!?!?!

NO, NO! God, no!

The people I know in Kingston, why, having seen their picture(s) I can hardly believe their age is a multiple of 15. Surely, now, let's be realistic.

Very cool site. I have heard about the strike. Can you just imagine if every woman and sadly, girl in the world stopped working for one whole day! Can you imagine the mess? The only pissy thing though is we would have twice the work to do the next day.

I'm going to start a new thread on Friday March 8 so we can share the unique ways we celebrate being women.

It's a bit contradictory. OK it's really contradictory but L'Oreal will give $1 to the Women's Foundation for every e mail card you send on IWD. What the hell it's a good cause

I don't know what they mean by the 28th anniversary of International Women's Day...very Canadian centric. IWD actually started at the turn of the last century.

Send an IWD card

I hate to burst your bubble, but IMHO what L'Oreal is really up to is collecting e-mail addresses for later junk mail. A dollar is not too much to pay for a valid e-mail address known to belong to your target market.

Of course it's only my cynical opinion, but when it comes to marketing and multinational corporations, cynicism is usually warranted. Just for fun, I think I'll create a HotMail account specifically to send a card to -- and then see what kind of spam I get along with it.

Yes, I actually am not crazy about getting email cards from corporations like L'oreal or whatever, because I just know that, despite the good intentions of the senders, it will probably get me onto spam lists. However, I've gotten lots of Hallmark e-cards and no spam from them, so I guess they're reputable enough. I wouldn't trust that L'oreal campaign though. Usually any time a corporation gives money to charity, it's because it's cheap advertising - probably a lot cheaper than buying air time and producing a commercial. It wouldn't surprise me if they also fatten up their spam lists that way as well.

Great column on International Women's Day
here

quote:
INTERNATIONAL Women's Day. But what is there to celebrate?

More cuts in government funding. Mothers and children living in poverty, depending on food banks. After years of promises of decent childcare and maternity leave, we still trail far behind what European women have taken for granted for decades.

I have no bubbles to burst. I know that L'Oreal is doing this for advertising purposes. But I sent cards last year and got no advertising from L'Oreal in the meantime. They have a check off box and you don't have to sign up to get their ads. They actually respect this or they did last year

The checkbox only asks whether you want to hear about special offers from L'Oreal. It does NOT promise that your e-mail address won't get sold or traded to others, passed to subsidiaries and "sister" companies, etc.; and it says nothing at all about how the recipient's address will be used.

As a matter of principle, I would never give out someone else's e-mail address, phone number, or any other contact info without their permission.
