Activities officials launch investigation, considering sanctions

By ANDALE GROSS
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas activities officials are investigating a school's refusal to let a female referee call a boys' high school basketball game.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association said referees reported that Michelle Campbell was preparing to officiate at St. Mary's Academy near Topeka on Feb. 2 when a school official insisted that Campbell could not call the game.

The reason given, according to the referees: Campbell, as a woman, could not be put in a position of authority over boys because of the academy's beliefs.

Campbell then walked off the court along with Darin Putthoff, the referee who was to work the game with her.

"I said, 'If Michelle has to leave, then I'm leaving with her,' " Putthoff said Wednesday. "I was disappointed that it happened to Michelle. I've never heard of anything like that."

The Activities Association said it is considering whether to take action against the private religious school. St. Mary's Academy, about 25 miles northwest of Topeka, is owned and operated by the Society of St. Pius X, which follows older Roman Catholic laws. The society's world leader, the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, was excommunicated by Pope John Paul II in the late 1980s.

Wow. the Society of Pope Pius X. That'd be these guys.

I don't get it though. I went to school in a pre Vatican II milieu, and there was no question whatsoever about the nuns having authority, and lots of it.

They were kinda scary actually. I remember them enforcing the rule about climbing trees in the playground.

Wow. I guess none of the people who made this decision are fans of the NBA.

The NBA has female refs. If a woman can call a foul on a 7foot multi-milionaire I wonder why a female can not call a foul on a 15 year old.

what are their beliefs?

Are there no "female" teachers in a position of authority?

The rejected woman official was also a retired police officer. Would these boys also be taught not to listen to a woman police officer?

What a shot in the arm for feminism in the USA!

So what does Jesus's mother think about this?

quote:
The Mother, of God, Mother of Jesus, wife of St. Joseph, and the greatest of all Christian saints. The Virgin Mother “was, after her Son, exalted by divine grace above all angels and men”.
Go figure a woman above all other men except Jesus. No use letting dogma get in the way of patriarchy.

Would Mary be an acceptable ref?

Jesus performed his first miracle because his mother asked him to do it. He said he wasn't ready yet, but his mother insisted, and he relented, out of respect for her.
