The federal government's "no sex without marriage" message isn't just for kids anymore.

Now the government is targeting unmarried adults up to age 29 as part of its abstinence-only programs, which include millions of dollars in federal money that will be available to the states under revised federal grant guidelines for 2007.

The government says the change is a clarification. But critics say it's a clear signal of a more directed policy targeting the sexual behavior of adults.

"They've stepped over the line of common sense," said James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit that supports sex education. "To be preaching abstinence when 90% of people are having sex is in essence to lose touch with reality. It's an ideological campaign. It has nothing to do with public health."

Wow. Amazing.

I'd like to see how many of the people championing that program were abstinent until they were 29, or have only ever had sex with one person - their spouse.

As a single adult, I sure as hell wouldn't give up sex. And I'm pretty sure they wouldn't, either.

What I find disturbing about this article is that this abstinence program seems to be taking a one-size fits all approach to sex-related issues. What’s wrong with designing a federal program that encourages sex education to lay (no pun-intended) out all the facts on all the options? I remember learning that abstinence was the only “sure” way to avoid STDs, unwanted pregnancy but I also learned about barrier method birth control and all the other goodies available to ensure my sex life was fun and positive. This “abstinence is the only sure method” message sounds to me like a poorly “cloaked” pro-religion campaign; not that anyone here is surprised by that. Yeah, abstinence is the only sure way, but it’s not the only option and there in lies the problem. It’s amazing how many people don’t know all the facts when it comes to sex education. This program is just a cheap way for Bush to throw a little money at his religious base who solidified his re-election. I say educate people on all their options, don’t limit it to a few, plain and simple. If people are given all the information in a manner they can effectively process, then they’ll make the decision that is right for them.

Oh and as a by the way Michelle….as a single adult you don’t count, remember? According to the people who are pushing abstinence as the only form of sex education, you’re defying God’s wishes because apparently “HE” loves procreation; of course the religious suggestion to procreate had nothing to do with marketing and economics – the more your organized religion’s members f*cked and procreated like rabbits, the more members your religion would have to make money, contribute to the collection plate, build more temples and feed the religious machine so that people doing “God’s will” and sending “his message” could at least do so in comfort and style and become bigger and more powerful than the other competing religions. So give up single life Michelle and get married so you can have lots and lots of legitimate babies like “God intended” for you. If you continue being single and “promiscuous” you risk facing “God’s wrath” and you’ll probably get “The AIDS” because that’s his newest way of punishing sinners.
