(Hobart, Tasmania) The Anti-Discrimination Commission in Australia's state of Tasmania has ordered the Australian Red Cross to defend its ban on gay blood donors.

The Commission is investigating a complaint by Michael Cain who complained that when he attempted to donate blood last October he was told that the Red Cross does not accept donations from men who have had male-to-male sex in the previous 12 months.

The United States and Canada also refuse to allow men who have sex with men to donate blood.

Gay and bisexual men are allowed to donate blood in Switzerland Italy and Spain. Last month Sweden's Prime Minister became the first world leader to publicly call for an end to the ban on gays from donating blood.
