Well, with the Canada Wordmark on their banners, it makes one wonder...this was from their march through downtown Ottawa this afternoon:

"Canada Wordmark

The "Canada" wordmark is the global identifier of the Government of Canada and is protected under the Trade-marks Act.

I have just e-mailed this message to: [email protected]

I am offended to learn that anti-choice activists have been photographed parading around Ottawa this afternoon with the Government of Canada "Canada" wordmark on their anti-choice banner (see photos at http://www.rabble.ca/babble/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=reply&f=24&t=000662)

Please take immediate action to put a stop to this false representation of Canadian government policy.

I received the following reply: "Thank you for your email of May 12, 2005, in which you bring to
our
attention the mis-use of the Canada Wordmark in a demonstration.
Unfortunately, this office does not deal with the protection of
the Canada
Word-mark. I have taken the liberty of forwarding your comments
to Mr.
Grant Johnson of the Federal Identity Program. I am sure he
will be in
touch with you shortly on this matter.

Thank you for your interest in the symbols of Canada,(...)"

I have found Mr. Johnson's e-mail address in case anyone else wants to write to him about this: [email protected].

Thank you. I have written.

Dear Mr. Johnson:

I am writing to inform you and object to the misuse of the Canada Wordmark in yesterday's "March for Life" in downtown Ottawa. Below are pictures of the offending signs:

http://www.timmeehan.ca/pics/march1.jpg
http://www.timmeehan.ca/pics/march2.jpg

The use of the Canada Wordmark in this context implies that the Government of Canada endorses this event. As someone who fervently believes in the reproductive rights of women and opposes efforts to re-criminalize abortion, I would appreciate it if you would make sure this does not happen again. Visitors to the Capital may be left with the mistaken belief that the Government of Canada endorses this event.

Thank you.

Tim Meehan

What I imagine would be really helpful if the gov. ever chose to sue for trademark infringement, would be proof that some people were confused, and thought that the Government of Canada was actually sponsoring the marchers.

Shouldn't be too hard to find. It looks to me like the Government of Canada sponsored the march. I'm actually kind of surprised nobody here is questioning the belief that they didn't sponsor this somehow, but that it was just copyright infringement.

I don't believe that for a minute.

BTW Tim, I forgot to thank you for bringing this to our attention. Did you get a reply yet?

Not yet. I did send a copy to Megan Gillis ([email protected]) at the Sun who wrote an article on the event. Haven't seen the Petfinder today so I don't know if they covered it.

Yeah, an Altoid, or if you don't have one, an extra-large package of unreconstituted tapioca pudding mix.
