Dr. James Holsinger Jr. is on record publically stating that homosexuality is a mental disorder. Though other Surgeon Generals have had lobby groups ask them to list homosexuality as a mental disorder, they have refused to do so.

Now, the USA has potential, strong at that, to have a Surgeon General, who needs no lobbying, to list homosexuality as a mental disorder in the AMA.

warning this is a link to a fundamentalist blog which approves of the anomination

Now, what remains to be seen is whether or not the nomination is allowed to pass.

If he gets blocked he'll just wait and do another one of his 'recess nominations' and put him in there.

I really just don't get why people in the US aren't standing in front of the white house throwing molotov cocktails over the fence.

Americans voted him in. Too bad for them.

Ah yes, reaping the thorns they sow.

Because they'd have to get past the crowd with the pitchforks and torches calling for hellfire and damnation upon the 'immoral' elements of their country. They'd be outnumbered. And besides, as long as it doesn't bother their own comfortable existance, an 'every person for themselves' society doesn't lend itself to sticking ones neck out to help anyone.

This is a copy of a paper Holsinger presented in 1991 to a United Methodist Church committee studying homosexuality. There's nothing here really unfamiliar, and I suspect his shallow arguments were well refuted even back in the day. If anything, he argues that the gay community in whatever place he's using for his population of reference has been ignored in terms of good public health education. He also seems to only understand human relationships in terms of penises and orifaces. Not the first person to be guilty of that I suppose, but a bit depressing in a prospective Surgeon General.
