Unlike some people, General Roberto Bendini, head of Argentina's army, understands the need to admit that his institution erred.Speaking at a ceremony marking the 194th anniversary of the creation of the Regiment "General San Martín", and in front of Defence Minister Nilda Garré, the vice-president and the chancellor, Bendini said "the army assumes its responsibility for errors committed" during the 1976 coup. (March 24 will be the 30th anniversary of the coup.)
He also criticized the actions of the Argentinian Armed Forces during the dictatorship, which he described as an "injustifiable and repressive regime", an "economic policy destructive to the national productive apparatus", and a "violator of social and political rights."
"Only through the path of truth and justice will we be able to free ourselves [the Army] of this heavy charge."
Well done, General Bendini.
