Unlike some people, General Roberto Bendini, head of Argentina's army, understands the need to admit that his institution erred.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 194th anniversary of the creation of the Regiment "General San Martín", and in front of Defence Minister Nilda Garré, the vice-president and the chancellor, Bendini said "the army assumes its responsibility for errors committed" during the 1976 coup. (March 24 will be the 30th anniversary of the coup.)

He also criticized the actions of the Argentinian Armed Forces during the dictatorship, which he described as an "injustifiable and repressive regime", an "economic policy destructive to the national productive apparatus", and a "violator of social and political rights."

"Only through the path of truth and justice will we be able to free ourselves [the Army] of this heavy charge."

Well done, General Bendini.

¡Gracias! I used to read Clarín as well as Página 12 every day ... am having such a hard time keeping up with languages and news in them. I've been working on a lot of stuff from the Italian for obvious reasons (Berlusconi is a G8 leader at least as personally sleazy and kitchy as Carlos Menem) and am struggling to learn German, which few speak in Montréal, at least in my neighbourhood. Keep saying - must get back into (language, discipline)...

If Connie admitted any kind of guilt, then I guess she would have to apply "rendition" to old Henry Kissinger...

The person and place names in the article give some idea as to how Italian Argentina is...
