After more than 40 years, Cuba has agreed
to sign the UN's civil rights agreement:

quote:
Cuba has pledged to sign two key international agreements on civil and political rights, paving the way for regular UN monitoring of its human rights record from 2009.

And violates principles such as the right to free assembly and free speech on the same day:

quote:
The announcement came as plainclothes police broke up a protest to mark international human rights day. There were no reports of injuries, and it was not clear whether marchers who were bundled into cars and driven away had been arrested.

Whaddya expect? They're just a bunch of commie pinko totalitarians. They don't have the Canadian tradition of unlimited freedom of dissent. Can you imagine peaceful demonstrators being rounded up in Canada? I rest my case.

Ya here in Canada, the gestapo sometimes look exactly like the dissenters protesting closed door meetings about shadowy guvmint agendas.

Oy! And don't be squeegyin' on the street corner by.

Fidel, I don't care what you think of the RCMP, to call them the "Gestapo" is beyond the pale. One of my closest friends works for the RCMP. I don't agree with you very often, but you do contribute to this forum, so please, please stop with the hyperbole. Usually, it just makes me tune you out, but in this instance, your insensitive remark gave me the urge to punch my computer screen.

And you know, computer screens are expensive for a college student.

One of your "closest friends" is a Mountie and you become violent when someone makes insensitive remarks about the RCMP?

Poor baby.

Huh?

I read the article linked by Fidel, and it doesn't say these people are RCMP:

Are you sure they're RCMP? Perhaps your friend could shed some light on this.

ETA: By the way, "Gestapo" is an acronym for "Secret State Police". These characters certainly look secretive. But I agree with you, they don't appear to be in traditional uniform.

West Coast Greeny put down that taser and step away from the monitor. This is a peaceful discussion. (to paraphrase some of this year's more infamous police adventures).

Yes some individual RCMP officers might be good people but the entire organisation is corrupt and quickly evolving into a right wing paramilitary force. What does your friend think about what the RCMP has become?
