In most of the world access to an abortion is covered by state health care. In some cases that is true in parts of the USA. In South Dakota common sense has succumbed to bastions of male dominance, government and religion, to force their will on women.

A Blogger posts do it at home abortion

I know this is a hot topic and one that has ardent and sometimes just ugly folks on both sides of the discussion. I don't see what the new law in South Dakota will do to prevent aborted pregnancies.

Women with means will travel to jurisdictions where they are legal or pay the huge financial price asked by Doctors willing to risk their practice for a high enough fee. Others will have to stay and revert to the 1950's to achieve what is legal in most of the world.

Hi Caribookidca,

This isn't really a news story, since it's not really breaking news. It's a very interesting link, though. I think it was posted in this thread where we were talking about abortion becoming illegal in South Dakota.

There is a continuation of that discussion in this thread, but I think this might be a good topic all on its own to discuss, since the discussion has moved past the home abortion blog.

So I'm going to move this thread to the feminism forum, where we can discuss it there.

Wow, I dont think women are going to get all this medical equipment and have DIY abortions at home. Anyone with these resources in South Dakota will probably be able to go to the next state over...

However, I attended a lecture from a woman named Rebecca Gomperts, a Dutch doctor who performs abortions in Europe, and she told us about a project they are doing to bring abortion to countries where it is illegal - Poland, Ireland and Portugal. THey use a non-surgical method, which is outlined here:
How Can I Do an Abortion?

She told us that when her group began publicizing this method, their hits on the net skyrocketed. They even received queries from a pregnant American soldier in Iraq who was too ashamed to see the army doctors.

I think this is on the whole a much safer route than trying to do dilation and curretage at home.

It's a dangerous misnomer to refer to the article as directions for "home abortion." The directions on the blog are quite specifically about creating an illegal but safe (as possible under the circumstances) clinic to conduct abortions.

The point of the post on the blog (which seems to have escaped many of the people who posted comments to it) is that knowledge is power and that women deserve to have detailed information about a procedure which they may have to undergo under less-than-ideal circumstances. Or which they may find themselves required to perform (desperate times, etc...): the only reason one has to be a doctor to perform an abortion is because the law requires it, not because absolutely no one else can have the skills required. This is not brain surgery: this is traditional women's knowledge, updated for the 21st century.

andrean, I looked at some of those instructions.

eg: Buy "a course" of antibiotics from a Mexican website.

Yeah? You ever watched a hospital run someone with a serious infection through the entire menu of antibiotics?

This is so damned dangerous.

skdadl, it is dangerous - but you've often observed the lengths that women will go to when faced with an unwanted pregnancy. The more information that is ciruclated, discussed and improved, the better.

Yes, andrean, I know, and please forgive my tone. I was reacting viscerally, as swirrly says, at thinking that it has come to this again.
