Toronto Hydro is giving away two compact fluorescent light bulbs to each household. Just go to Home Depot on scheduled days

Check here for schedule and locations.

Those things make me want to gouge my eyes out with rusty spoons.

I loathe fluorescent light.

That's nice.

I once paid about $9 for two of those bulbs and one of them lasted less than a year.

They were guaranteed to last for several years - that's the only way you could ever get your money's worth out of them. But of course I had misplaced the sales receipt and the guarantee. So now it's compact fluorescent landfill.

How am I supposed to get to a Home Depot? I live downtown, and I do not have a car.

What a great energy saver. Long-lasting light bulbs ... for people who drive all over the place to get them.

And how many incandescent bulbs did you buy and replace over the course of that year?

skdadl, Gerrard Square is a simple College streetcar ride away! Either that, or take the subway to Pape, then the Pape bus down to Gerrard, then walk east to the incomparable Gerrard Square Mall, where blake and I have spent many a romantic hour. Well, a few. Well, maybe not so romantic. Well, but fun and weird for sure.

(I'm not exactly sure if the Yorkdale location is in the mall, but should be near the subway station regardless.)

Interesting promotion for Home Depot too.

If you want a blue box, green box or grey box now, you get them from Home Hardware. Again, great idea for the store. Get people, who are in a "house and home" mindset already, into your store.

On the bulbs themselves: thanks awfully, but if I want to look green, I'll do it through overdrinking.

The Yorkdale Home Depot is north of Yorkdale, on the other side of the 401. Wilson subway is closer than Yorkdale.

I don't really know, but the relevant statistic would be how many standard bulbs that that particular light fixture would have consumed over that year. I'd say 2.

I had a fluorescent outside bulb I put on every single day of the year, and it lasted without fail. During the course of that same year I went through an entire 12-pack of incandescent, albeit for different fixtures.

We have about two dozen fluorescents. I have only seen one fail.

My big complaint is that we have several light fixtures that won't accept them because of the fat part at the root of the fluorescent bulb. (it doesn't sound right calling it a bulb.) Several of our light fixtures have decorative shields that are quite narrow near the socket.

It is interesting that as power consumption becomes an issue, the stores are full of halogen light fixtures. Don't they demand a lot of power?

BTW, never pay full price for those things. Keep your eyes open and watch for sales. I've seen the same bulbs with $20/each price difference depending on retailer.

If I remember correctly, fluorescent light has a negative impact on cognitive function. Full spectrum compact fluorescent lights might be the answer here, though as I haven't seen any studies on them, I can't be sure.

Fer gosh sakes, it's a free light bulb innit? I've had mini flourescents that have lasted years - in the past five years, I've yet to replace one - but maybe I'm just lucky. But FREEE! FREEE! FREEE! ack ack...

One should use them in selective locations, starting with those areas wherein the light tends to be left on for long periods. They're great for hallways and open areas. You are right; you may not one for a reading lamp. As chubbybear says, it's free. Put it where it won't bother you. I put one in a high lamp that can only be reached with scaffolding, because I don't ever want to have to change it again.
