Something very weird has happened with my Outlook. If I try to download my email I am told I don't have permission to do that.

I've tried repairing, re-installing, restoring, swearing, throwing a temper tantrum. Nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions? PLEASE?

What's the exact error message? Are you downloading from a server? Who is your e-mail going through (sympatico, Rogers, etc.) and are you running Outlook or Outlook Express? Have you tried accessing your e-mail via the web login?

Are you on a network or running Vista and have more than one user on the machine? What's the general situation?

The exact message is "You don't have permission to perform this operation."

I am running on XP on my lap top. No network. It is the full version of Outlook 07. My ISP is a municipal telephone system. I have checked the settings, they are right. It has been going on for a couple of days now. I can't figure it out.

Try logging into the webmail access first to see if you can get your messages. Report back

Poking around the web, I came up with this brilliant suggestion from an anonomymous person. They said to check the file permissions in this location: c:\document & settings\\application data\microsoft\outlook

check for files: outlook.srs, outlook.dat and views.dat, and make sure file permissions on those ones are more than just read only ie. write and execute

ps: The blogger didn't answer as to whether it worked or not. So I have no idea if this is your problem or no

I have to admit that, faced with MS Outlook problems, having NOT switched to the Mozilla or firefox product, I switched to webmail and never switched back. Most ISP's provide such a service and, since there's no e mail without an internet connection anyway, there's not much of a difference between e mail through webmail versus e mail through the Outlook software on the PC. I'm limited to 100 Megs by my ISP and I can't seem to block some annoying senders (mostly one person in particular) but, other than that, there's not much of a difference.

Of course, my remarks don't help much if you're determined to make use of MS Outlook on your PC. Heh.

My emails are in webmail, but I get like 50-75 a day for work (not spam) and the webmail of my ISP is really dorky. The emails come out with little things like this > in front of each line and the formatting is awful.

I am going to try the read only bit right now

Have you tried getting your ISP to talk you through a fix for your e mail? Depending on how you approach them, they might help.

This is why I LOVE babble. All these posts in a few minutes to help and Fidel gets the winner.

Now if I could only freakin figure out how that could have been changed. I wonder if I have a virus. I have run a whole whack of scans and nothing, but it seems a bit odd when I am the only one using my laptop.

Naw, won't be a virus... Atleast not one I've ever seen. Don't be worried if you find nothing with your scans

So it was working, and then without changing anything it suddenly started up with this permission error?

I've had XP go a bit funny on me with some permissions since Service Pack 3 went on. It's a bit more nitpicky about asking if I really want to run a particular program if it lacks a digital signature.

I refused to install SP3, as I had heard alarming things about it.
