we are always told that there is no test or scan to detect early parkinson's, but in europe there is DaT-SCAN.

DaT-SCAN is a radiotracer for SPECT. it is injeced into a vein and detected in the brain using SPECT machines. SPECT machines are considerably less expensive than MRI, and we already have them.

DaT-SCAN is made by GE, an american company, but is only marketed in europe.

why is it desirable to leave sick people undiagnosed for a long as possible? of all the dispicable ways to save a buck.

Does it have anything to do with awaiting regultory approvals in the USA?

According to the medical literature, DatScan is potentially useful in diagnosing Parkinson's but it's still an open question whether it's better than other methods. Europe and the US have different standards for judging the value of a new procedure.

it absolutely is not an open question. it catches it more often, earlier, and does not cater to the philosophy of "the longer people go undiagnosed the better."

Hmm, maybe you're right. Maybe a right-wing message board would be much more open to your concern. Why don't you try it?

Seriously though, if you're that concerned about it, get in contact with your MP and MLA. It might be a little more effective than scolding posters on a message board about a technology few of us know anything about.

Even I don't know that much about it, and I've learned how PET works and so on. Best to go get the regulatory bodies' attention and say "Ahem, yo, check this out."
