(Trail) Two locals of the Steelworkers union have gone on strike at the Trail, B.C., smelter of metals producer Teck Cominco.

More than 1,300 production, technical and clerical workers set up picket lines early Tuesday morning, the union said.

Money is the main issue.

"This company is rolling in profits and cash," Western Canada director Steve Hunt said in a statement. "It is ridiculous that it has to take a strike for this company to realize that its workers deserve a fair and equitable portion of the increased wealth they have worked so hard to produce."
