BBC

quote:
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar has been assassinated in a gun attack in the capital, Colombo.

The murder was being blamed by a senior police officer on the Tamil Tigers separatist rebels, who have been observing a ceasefire since 2002.

But the ceasefire has been under recent growing strain, amid rebel claims that the government was continuing to conduct a covert war against them.

Apparently, Kadirgamar was himself a Tamil.

Has anyone else been able to follow Sri Lankan politics closely lately?

skdadl, this story has been puzzling me all day. I called my friends parents to see what they could say. They're Sri Lankan and tied closely to family there on both sides of the conflict and they said they know nihil on what is going on

I haven't heard about Sri Lanka in so long. I've read about the ongoing nationalist struggle for coursework, but I'm not familiar with the current events that much.

Anyway, Sri Lanka imposes emergency rule (BBC story).

[rant about journalistic bugboo]One thing that's always really annoyed me about reporting on Sri Lanka is that the word "terrorism" is always used to so sloppily. It's a nationalist struggle, limited to Sri Lanka for the most part. Yes, the Tamils use less than honourable tactics. So do the government forces. To conflate civil wars with the Bin Ladens just muddies the waters. It helps no one.[/end rant]

ETA: Sri Lanka timeline Note however the very early parts of this timeline should be treated sceptically. Both Sinhalese and Tamils present different competing versions of the early settlement of Sri Lanka.

The Tigers have denied responsibility for the killing. We strongly condemn this act,’’ S.P. Thamilselvan, leader of the Tigers’ political wing, told reporters in rebel-held Kilinochchi. ‘‘Connecting the LTTE to this killing is very wrong and it will worsen the present situation,’’ he said. ‘‘There is no need for the LTTE to kill him.’’

Of course, I somehow doubt that will stop the cries of those who want to see the LTTE branded "terrorist"

So far only CTV and Telegraph have links.

I don't have enough faith in the Sri Lankan government to believe that these 12 arrests are anything other than a round-up of some "usual suspects".

I'd imagaine most Tamils in Sri Lanka feel the same.
