(queerday) Anouar Aurangzeb, above, has had his application for French asylum declined for the second time this year. Aurangzeb, 27, is being sought by the Pakistani police and by members of the Islamic group Jamaah Islamiyah who've arrested him twice already and killed his boyfriend.

Aurangzeb created and presided over the Islamabad Rawalpindi Lesbian and Gay Organization (IRLGO), Pakistan's first gay and lesbian organization.

In his latest bid for asylum he included an April 2005 Islamic Weekly article as new evidence. The article condemned the IRLGO as an association "aimed at misleading Muslims," included a photo of Aurangzeb with his name, and called for readers to report him and other IRLGO members as they "must be killed publicly under the Pakistani law."

Oh no... doesn't sound like a candidate for asylum at all...

Sounds like some bureaucratic paper pushing sadist is enjoying watching him sweat.

We could use brave souls like him here in Canada. He should apply here.

But won't Canada say France is a "safe third country"?

Indeed, I have seen so much bureaucratic "arbitraire" - arbitrary decisions without rhyme or reason except to show one's weight, here, in France and in several other countries that one wants to throw up one's hands... But it is important to keep on fighting.

I guess I don't understand immigration law. Does he reside now in France, and Canada could refuse him on that basis?

You're right though, bureaucratic decisions can be utterly nonsensical. Jemaah Islamiyah murdered his boyfriend, but he's safe as the bank of England, oh yeah...

More on France and so-called "safe countries"...

quote:
A support group for LGBT asylum seekers has started a petition against the French government's list of "safe countries" because the list includes nine that condemn gays: Bosnia-Herzégovina, India, Mali, Mauritius, Senegal, Benin, Ghana, Cap-Vert and Mongolia. Europe is also apparently looking into establishing such a list.
