The topic of GDP came up in another thread, and the discussion was quite lively, so I thought it could have it's own thread (here, rahter than in Humanities and Science).

My own take is GDP is more or less useless, not so much as a measure, but as a number that can be useful for determining policy, or forecasting in the economy.

I know there are many who disagree, so tell me what GDP measures, and why we should care what it is.
