No Jail for Rich Drug Dealers.

quote:
Purdue Pharma L.P pleaded guilty in a Virginia court to felony misbranding of OxyContin with the intent to defraud. The company's president, chief lawyer and former chief medical officer also pleaded guilty to charges of misbranding – a crime of mislabelling, fraudulently promoting or marketing a drug for an unapproved use.

"With its OxyContin, Purdue unleashed a highly abusable, addictive and potentially dangerous drug on an unsuspecting and unknowing public," U.S. Attorney John Brownlee said in a release.

quote:
In Canada, OxyContin falls under the federal government's Narcotic Control Act. Health Canada has said it is concerned about reports of widespread abuse of the drug, especially in Atlantic Canada.

If one needed further evidence that the war on drugs is actually a war on the working class, look no further.

Well, I just thought I'd mention this news item because Oxycontin is something that is effecting communities not just in Atlantic Canada where the notably behind the times Health Canada says, but everywhere.

I don't believe London, Ontario is much different from other communities. Previous to the advent of Oxycontin, there wasn't much of an opiate addiction problem here. Heroin, while present, seemed to be contained within a small community of users.

Now we have a methadone clinic, and all the problems associated with a high proportion of addicts addicted to opiates like Oxycontin and of course, percs.

This has caused not just devastation to the lives of people who have become addicted, but it has increased costs on our health care system, our police budgets, and decreased our individual safety.

The American fines probably don't even come close to covering those costs in the U.S., and probably make only a modest dent in the profits from Oxycontin that Purdue, and it's shareholders, have enjoyed and will enjoy in the years to come.

Here in Canada, it's not even being investigated.

Maybe the Hell's Angel's real mistake is in not wearing three piece suits and having dealers with initials after their names.

It's time the RCMP-- or even better, a police service with credibility-- investigate the pharmacuetical industry and doctors the same way they would investigate any other nefarious gang.

Because that's what they are, Bikers in Lab Coats, set to destroy a nieghborhood near you.

Does anyone remember the misleading and inaccurate pre-election Conservative ad - with Jack's moustache - saying Jack wants to legalize drugs ?

Well Alcohol, Tobacco and Pharmaceuticals are DRUGS, the 3 most lethal and addictive by far.
And Jack never called for the legalization of crack, heroin or crystal meth.Heck, he never even actually called for the legalization of Cannabis, just for non-punitive measures for adult use.

But I guess Harper's favorite drugs are superior because they cause heaps of dead bodies, severe withdrawl symptoms and widespread social & medical devastation, so logically, they must remain fully legal (and the BigPharma CEO demands yacht #12).I thought Neo-Cons were the Pro-Life party !

There was also the issue when Harper said that one of his Conservative candidates getting caught for alcohol smuggling was "not a criminal matter...".
